This is a lovely candid photo of a boy staring into his dad’s eyes. It was important here to darken the background as much as possible, so that we concentrate on the boy’s face. It’s a lovely photo that really captures that love between father and son. And it’s so much better without the young boy looking into the camera.

Young girl playing in the garden
Posted onAgain, props to the rescue – if you give a child something to do that they enjoy, you’ll get some great portrait photos that really start to capture the things about them that you love to watch.
Time for some fun exercises in the studio
Posted onHere are some energetic moments in the studio – when a young child’s attention starts to wander, it’s time to get them to do something fun so they don’t feel they’re always being told what to do, which isn’t fun for anyone (adults included!).
We always try to give enough time for these unplanned moments to happen. Yes of course these aren’t the photos you’d hang on your wall (we had plenty of others for that purpose), but they’re definitely the photos you’d want in an album after the photoshoot as a record of what your child was at that stage of your life. We find parents love these extra, super-informal photos in their albums.
Location portraits of a young girl
Posted onWe travelled to the grounds of West Wycombe Park to take some outdoor portrait photos in the grounds and gardens. We knew this location would provide a lush green background for the photos, so we suggested complementary pinks and blues for the clothes, which work well together against the surrounding greens.
Portraits of a young girl and her doll
Posted onPretty pastel-striped clothes for a bright and contemporary-looking family photoshoot in the studio with a white background. Bringing along a favourite toy, and having it feature in some of the photos, has the dual purpose of providing some lovely ‘special moments’, but it also helps a child to relax and feel more comfortable, especially if we’re doing the photoshoot away from their home.
Fun and games with studio portrait photos
Posted onAs is often the case, we’ll usually let very young children play around first, so they get used to what we’re doing. This often leads into something approaching a game, which they enjoy. On this occasion we found I had a little ‘helper’ who wanted to assist us in taking the photos. This approach helps children relax and get used to what’s going on – that way we’ll create a set of lovely studio portrait photos.
Fun times in a studio photoshoot
Posted onIn this family photoshoot we wanted to create an environment for lovely smiles and laughter for some really endearing photos. Unsurprisingly ‘Little Miss Mischief’ was around at the start, which we’d already allowed for, knowing how young children would rather just play around than have their photograph taken.
Lucky her mum also wanted to take part in ‘the game’ that took place, so we were able to create some lovely informal photos to go in the family album.
A girl playing with a balloon
Posted onWe started off with everyone in a good mood, so the great photos kept on coming. All was going really well, as you can see in the first photo, with happy smiling faces all around. That was, however, until the balloon popped, which was closely followed by the tears.
Although the second photo with the tears isn’t a ‘display’ photo, it’s one of those very special memories that you rarely catch in a photo and will be a cherished memory in a family album.
First birthday studio photoshoot
Posted onThis was a studio photoshoot on a young girl’s first birthday. For the first part of the session we got everyone relaxed by messing around a little bit. The aim wasn’t to get any great photos, but to put everyone at ease to make the later ‘proper’ photos work out much better.
Although ‘Miss Small Person’ tried her best to pop the balloon with her finger nails, we eventually managed to create some beautiful photos of this first birthday celebration.
Beautiful photos of a young girl
Posted onThese beautiful photos of a young girl were part of a studio portrait session. Both of these photos capture the lovely cheekiness snd cuteness of this young girl during this photoshoot in the studio. The first of these two was enlarged and displayed as wall art in their living room for several years for all to see.
